MG M9 Electric MPV Aims for a Fast Start in India

JSW MG Motor India is ready to enter the luxury people‑mover game with its new MG M9, a seven‑seat electric MPV that will be built from semi‑knocked‑down (SKD) kits at the company’s Halol plant in Gujarat. At 5.2 metres long and two metres wide, the M9 is larger than Toyota’s Vellfire and boasts a best‑in‑class 3.2‑metre wheelbase, giving passengers extra cabin space.

Inside, the focus is on comfort. The second‑row captain’s chairs offer 16‑way adjustment, heating, cooling and massage. Twin sunroofs, three‑zone climate control, a 12.23‑inch touchscreen and a 7‑inch digital cluster round out the tech, while soft suede and leather trim in cognac brown raise the luxury feel. One‑touch sliding doors make entry and exit easy.

Power comes from a 90 kWh battery and a 245 hp motor driving the front wheels. MG says a 30‑to‑80 percent DC fast‑charge takes under 30 minutes. Despite its size, the M9 promises a smooth, composed ride, helped by adaptive suspension. Level‑2 ADAS brings adaptive cruise, lane‑keep assist and blind‑spot detection, while seven airbags and a rigid steel body have already earned five‑star ratings in Euro and Australian NCAP tests.

MG will sell the M9 through a brand‑new premium network called MG Select. These minimalist showrooms—each featuring curated fine art—will open first in 13 major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, by September 2025. The company is also onboarding fresh dealer groups such as Jubilant to maintain top‑level service.

Target customers include high‑net‑worth individuals, film stars and five‑star hotels that want a plush, emissions‑free shuttle. MG claims pre‑bookings are strong and has set an ambitious goal of 1,000 sales in the first year, challenging the Vellfire’s hold on the segment. Expected prices fall between ₹70 lakh and ₹80 lakh (ex‑showroom).

While global shortages of rare‑earth materials have hit many carmakers, MG says it will sidestep delays by importing key electronic parts fully built from China. Confident in demand, the company plans to launch a new model every six months and is chasing a 33 percent share of India’s EV market by 2030.
