Maruti Suzuki’s Dzire sedan has become the best-selling passenger car in India for May 2025. This is the first time in over five years that a sedan has topped the monthly sales chart. According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Maruti sold 18,084 units of the Dzire in May.
The Dzire outsold many popular cars including Maruti Ertiga (16,140 units), Brezza (15,566), Hyundai Creta (14,860), Mahindra Scorpio (14,401), and Maruti Swift (14,135).
The last time a sedan led monthly sales was in January 2020, when the Dzire sold 22,406 units. After that, hatchbacks and SUVs became more popular. From FY22 to FY25, the Wagon R held the number one spot in annual sales. During this time, Dzire’s rank dropped but stayed within the top ten.
The latest Dzire model was launched on November 11, 2024. Since then, its sales have steadily grown. The May sales mark the best performance of this generation of Dzire.
Experts say that the Dzire’s return to the top is due to its strong demand in the fleet segment and its CNG variant. Many buyers prefer the Dzire for its good mileage, strong brand value, and high resale price. It gives 25.71 km/l on petrol and 33.73 km/kg on CNG.
Another big reason for its success is safety. On June 11, Maruti Suzuki announced that Dzire received a 5-star safety rating in the Bharat NCAP. It is the first sedan and the first Maruti Suzuki car to earn this top rating under the program.
