Karti Chidambaram Bats for Urban-Focused New Party

Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram has suggested the creation of a new political party that focuses only on urban issues. He shared his views in a post on social media platform X, saying that current political parties do not give enough attention to the problems of India’s growing cities.

Chidambaram, son of senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, said that a political party focused on better living conditions, good infrastructure, and public services—without talking about religion, caste, or language—could get strong support from urban voters.

He wrote, “In my opinion, a new political party purely focusing on urban issues — ease of living, quality of infrastructure & public services — devoid of emotive issues (religion, caste & language) will have a fair level of acceptance.”

Urban areas in India are facing many problems like poor roads, garbage issues, traffic jams, and weak public services. Yet, political discussions often focus more on identity-based topics or rural concerns.

This is not the first time Chidambaram has spoken about urban problems. Earlier this year, he criticized the Chennai Corporation for not handling waste properly and asked them to learn from cities like Indore.

His recent post has connected with many city-based professionals and middle-class citizens who feel ignored by traditional political parties. These urban voters often do not have a strong political voice, but they face daily struggles due to poor city planning and governance.

Though Chidambaram didn’t say he would start a party himself, his message has started a new debate. Many people are now wondering if India is ready for a political party that talks only about city-related issues.

Experts believe that if such a party is formed and stays away from divisive politics, it could change how voters in big cities think and vote in the future.

Only time will tell if this idea becomes a real movement. But for now, Chidambaram has certainly given people something new to think about.
