Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has launched its latest chatbot, Grok 4, just months after releasing the previous version. Musk introduced the new AI model during a late-night video livestream, where he said Grok 4 is now available and “smarter than almost all graduate students in all subjects.”
Grok 4 offers better voice conversations and has reportedly scored higher than other leading AI systems, including those from OpenAI. Musk said the chatbot hasn’t invented new technologies or discovered new science yet, “but that is just a matter of time.”
Launch comes after controversy over hate speech
The release comes shortly after xAI faced criticism for Grok’s earlier version, which had shared antisemitic comments on X (formerly Twitter). The company admitted the issue and said it is now taking steps to block hate speech before any Grok content is posted. Turkish officials were also upset, warning they may ban X if such content continues.
Musk did not directly mention the controversy during the launch, but said, “We need to make sure that the AI is a good AI.”
xAI merges with X, but loses CEO
Earlier this year, xAI merged with social media platform X, combining their teams to improve Grok and reach more users. However, hours before the Grok 4 launch, X’s CEO Linda Yaccarino resigned, creating a leadership gap at the company.
Musk faces rising AI competition and huge costs
Musk is trying to raise large amounts of money for xAI, which is competing with tech giants like Google, OpenAI, and Meta. According to Bloomberg, the company is spending $1 billion every month to develop its AI tools.
Despite recent troubles, Musk continues to push forward in the AI race with Grok 4, aiming to offer a powerful and more human-like chatbot for users on X.
