India’s active Covid-19 caseload has climbed to 7,154, with 33 new infections reported in the past 24 hours, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare released on Thursday. Three fatalities were also recorded during this period.

Of the three deaths, two occurred in Maharashtra and one in Madhya Pradesh. All three individuals were elderly and had underlying respiratory and chronic health conditions.

The current uptick in Covid-19 cases across the country is being linked to emerging variants, including LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and the newly detected NB.1.8.1 subvariant.

Experts recommend targeted protection over mass booster drive

Health experts have advised against initiating a widespread booster vaccination campaign in light of the recent spike in Covid-19 cases. Instead, they recommend a focused strategy targeting high-risk groups, such as the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and those with chronic health conditions.

With hybrid immunity—developed through previous infections and widespread vaccine coverage—now prevalent, experts believe additional booster doses for the general population are unnecessary at this point.

They continue to emphasize the importance of adhering to Covid-appropriate behaviour, including mask-wearing, proper hand hygiene, and avoiding crowded areas.

In response to the rising case numbers, the central government has issued advisories to states and union territories, calling for increased alertness and readiness.

Healthcare professionals have also highlighted the need to distinguish between Covid-19 and other seasonal viral illnesses, which often share symptoms like fever, fatigue, and respiratory discomfort.

At-risk individuals, particularly seniors and those with existing health issues, are urged to take extra precautions and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms arise or worsen.

The Indian Medical Association has reinforced the call for preventive steps, such as wearing masks and maintaining hygiene, to help curb the spread of the virus.
