The Congress party on June 17 criticised the Modi government, saying that instead of the promised “acche din” (good days), people are now facing “karz ke din” (days of debt). Congress leader Jairam Ramesh shared concerns over the country’s economic situation, especially for middle-class and poor families.
Ramesh cited a news report that said household savings in India have dropped for the third year in a row, even though inflation is under control and some people are earning more.
He said, “People’s savings are going down and loans are increasing. That means prices are still high and incomes are not rising enough. So, people are using their savings or taking loans to survive.”
Calling the situation “very worrying,” Ramesh accused the Modi government of being careless and ignoring the struggles of common people. He said the promises of a better life made during the elections were not being fulfilled.
Posting in Hindi on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Ramesh wrote, “The truth is—common people are under financial pressure, but the government is not doing anything.”
The Congress party has regularly criticised the BJP-led Centre for high prices, low private investment, and stagnant wages. They claim that these problems are making life harder for ordinary citizens.
The statement adds to the growing political attacks by the opposition as India prepares for major state and national elections. While the government has defended its economic performance by pointing to growth and infrastructure projects, critics say it has failed to improve everyday life for millions of Indians.
Congress leaders say the government needs to act fast to help people, especially by boosting jobs and reducing financial stress on families.4
