Congress Questions PM Modi Over Trump’s Ceasefire Remarks

The Congress party on Saturday demanded a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi after former U.S. President Donald Trump repeated his claim that he helped stop a war between India and Pakistan.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said Trump has made this claim 13 times in the past 34 days across three different countries. Trump claimed he used trade as a tool to prevent a conflict and praised both India and Pakistan.

Ramesh posted a list of all the occasions when Trump spoke about the issue and also shared a video of Trump making the claim at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

“@narendramodi, when will you speak up?” Ramesh asked on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Ramesh also pointed out that Trump’s remarks come at a sensitive time, as the nation is mourning the Ahmedabad plane crash tragedy.

Tensions between India and Pakistan had increased after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. India responded with precision strikes on May 7. Pakistan tried to hit Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The fighting stopped after military officers from both sides held talks on May 10.

While Trump continues to say he stopped a war, India maintains that peace was restored through direct talks between military leaders.

Congress has also criticized the Modi government’s foreign policy, saying it has failed and is driven by domestic politics.

Ramesh said recent U.S. actions — including praise for Pakistan by a top U.S. Army general and an upcoming visit by Pakistan’s army chief to Washington — show India is losing diplomatic ground. He called for an all-party meeting and a special Parliament session to discuss the situation.
