A political row erupted on Saturday after Congress leader Sonia Gandhi criticised the Indian government for its silence on the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, calling it a “diplomatic lapse” and a break from India’s “moral and strategic traditions.” In response, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defended India’s position and accused Congress of viewing diplomacy “through the lens of their politics.”
In a strongly worded op-ed for The Hindu, Gandhi condemned Israel’s bombing of Iranian territory, labelling it “unlawful” and a “dangerous escalation” with global implications. She also criticised Israel’s “brutal and disproportionate” actions in Gaza, accusing it of disregarding civilian lives.
Gandhi urged India to raise its voice, highlighting that Iran has historically supported India, including its stance on Kashmir in 1994 at the UN Human Rights Commission. She also referred to the collapse of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), which she said impacted India’s interests in key projects like the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor.
Responding to her remarks, BJP spokesperson RP Singh said that India’s stance on the Israel-Iran conflict is clear and consistent—that both nations must de-escalate tensions. “The Congress is viewing diplomacy from a political perspective,” Singh added, defending Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic approach.
The BJP emphasized that India’s foreign policy remains rooted in strategic neutrality and peaceful resolution, especially in volatile regions like West Asia. The party also reiterated that the government is closely monitoring the situation, ensuring that India’s long-term interests are protected.
As tensions continue in the Middle East, the political exchange between Congress and BJP reflects a broader debate on how India should navigate its complex international relations while balancing moral values and strategic goals.
