Apple Brings Swift Coding to Android Apps

Apple is expanding the use of its popular programming language, Swift, to support Android app development. This means developers may soon be able to write one set of code using Swift and build apps for both iOS and Android devices at the same time.

To make this possible, Apple has formed a Swift Android Workgroup. This group has 10 members and is open to more people who want to contribute. Their main job is to make sure Swift works well with Android, fix bugs, improve tools, and add features like debugging support for Android apps written in Swift.

Right now, developers usually use Swift for iOS apps and Kotlin for Android apps. But with Swift coming to Android officially, developers can save time by using the same language for both platforms. This will make app development faster and easier.

A developer in the group explained that Swift can power an entire app, while still using the native design tools of Android and iOS. This gives users a smooth experience on both platforms without developers having to write separate code for each one.

There are already tools, like Skip, that allow developers to write Swift code and create apps for Android. Skip even converts SwiftUI code into Android’s Jetpack Compose interface. Now, with Apple’s direct support, such tools are expected to get better and more reliable.

Apple already supports Swift on Windows and Linux, so adding Android is a big step toward making Swift a universal coding language. This move also encourages more developers to use Swift outside Apple’s ecosystem.

If you’re a developer interested in using Swift for Android, you can follow or join the project on the Swift for Android GitHub roadmap.

Overall, this is great news for app developers who want to save time and effort by using one language for both Android and iOS apps. Apple’s move could make Swift more powerful and widely used than ever before.
