Union Home Minister Amit Shah has confirmed that BJP leader K Annamalai will be given important national responsibilities, but he will continue to work actively in Tamil Nadu politics. Shah praised Annamalai’s leadership and said that the BJP will make use of his skills at the national level.
Earlier this year, Annamalai stepped down as the president of the Tamil Nadu BJP, and Nainar Nagendran took his place. However, Shah has continued to support Annamalai and praised his efforts in spreading Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ideas across Tamil Nadu.
In a recent interview, Shah said that the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) — which includes the BJP and AIADMK — will win the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. He also said that the Chief Minister will be from the AIADMK, though he did not name anyone specifically. This statement shows that the BJP plans to work closely with AIADMK in the upcoming elections.
Shah’s announcement is important because Tamil Nadu has been ruled mostly by Dravidian parties since 1967. A national party like the BJP playing a bigger role in the state’s politics is seen as a major development.
Shah had earlier praised Annamalai’s work as state BJP chief, calling it “commendable.” He said Annamalai helped the party grow in Tamil Nadu and improved its organisation. He also posted on social media platform X that Annamalai’s leadership had helped carry BJP’s message to the grassroots level.
Now, with a national role planned for Annamalai and continued involvement in state politics, the BJP seems to be preparing for a stronger presence in Tamil Nadu.
In short, Annamalai will work at both the national and state level, and the BJP-AIADMK alliance aims to form the next government in Tamil Nadu in 2026. This could change the political scene in the state, giving a national party more power than it has had in decades.
