As the monsoon begins, health experts warn that the risk of Hepatitis B infection is rising across India. This virus affects the liver and can be passed from a mother to her baby during pregnancy or delivery. It can also spread through infected blood or body fluids, including during unprotected sex.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 25.4 crore people worldwide were living with long-term Hepatitis B infection in 2022. Each year, about 10.2 lakh new infections are recorded. The good news is that this infection can be prevented with a vaccine.
What Are the Symptoms?
Many people do not show symptoms early on, which makes the infection hard to detect. When symptoms do appear, they may include:
- Fever
- Tiredness
- Stomach pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)
How the Vaccine Helps
The Hepatitis B vaccine teaches your body to fight the virus. It uses a non-infectious part of the virus to train your immune system. Over 1 billion doses have been given globally since 1982, showing how safe and trusted it is.
Earlier, the vaccine was thought to protect for just 8 years, but new research shows it can last up to 25 years if taken properly. However, protection may be weaker in older adults, smokers, alcohol users, or those with liver or heart problems.
Other Ways to Prevent Hepatitis B
While vaccination is the best defense, other steps can help reduce risk:
- Safe sex: Always use protection to lower the chances of infection.
- Avoid sharing: Do not share razors, needles, toothbrushes, or anything that may come in contact with blood.
- Practice hygiene: Clean cuts properly, and use disinfectants like diluted bleach to clean blood spills.
Stay safe this monsoon by following healthy practices and getting vaccinated. It’s the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from Hepatitis B.
