Runner to Assemble BYD EVs in Bangladesh by Next Year

Runner Automobiles PLC will begin production of electric vehicles through its partnership with BYD in Bangladesh which will create a major advancement for the country automotive industry. The partnership will create new production facilities which will help meet rising demand for electric vehicle transportation solutions. The agreement, described as a “master supply and manufacturing” deal, was signed recently and approved during a board meeting of Runner Automobiles. Company officials predict that local production of BYD vehicles will begin within the upcoming 12 months.

The 2024 Bangladesh market entry of BYD marks its status as one of the top global producers of electric vehicles. The company distributes its products through CG-Runner Bangladesh Limited which operates as a subsidiary of Runner Group. The new partnership will enhance existing collaboration through its ability to create domestic manufacturing operations.

Runner Automobiles plans to build a manufacturing plant in Bhaluka which belongs to the Mymensingh region. The facility will conduct assembly operations and paintwork for electric vehicle production. BYD will establish complete technical assistance which includes engineer and worker training for local personnel who will acquire skills needed to support Vietnam’s developing electric vehicle industry.

Local assembly operations provide manufacturers with a major advantage because they reduce operational expenses. The process of importing complete vehicles results in high import costs which reach approximately 93 percent. The initial phase of production will enable costs to decrease from their current position to approximately 40 percent.  The company executives have explained that price reductions will not happen right away because their business still relies on imported materials and their existing production expenses.

The project requires further development because its design and supply chain components are still being planned. The facility will create approximately 300 employment opportunities which will help drive economic development in the area when it reaches its operational capacity. The initiative represents a beneficial development that will promote electric vehicle usage in Bangladesh while enhancing the domestic automotive sector.
