Assam CM Sarma Pledges to End Encroachments Before Delhi Move

Assam CM Vows to Eradicate Encroachments Before National Politics

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has promised to remove illegal encroachments across the state before considering a move to national politics. Speaking in Guwahati, he said that clearing encroachments and stopping illegal land occupation is one of his government’s main priorities.

Sarma declared he would not leave state politics until he “breaks the backbone” of people involved in illegal land occupation. He noted that many lands in Assam are occupied without permission and vowed to restore them to the state.

His remarks came during his ongoing election campaign in Assam, aiming to win support from urban voters. Sarma’s tough stance on illegal land occupation is intended to appeal to citizens concerned about city development and law and order.

Assam has carried out large-scale eviction drives in recent years to remove people living on government and forest lands without legal rights. The state government says these measures protect official land and prevent illegal settlements, which are essential for long-term development and security.

However, such eviction efforts have faced criticism from opposition parties and community groups, who argue that these drives can negatively impact vulnerable communities and must follow legal procedures.

By focusing on encroachment removal before pursuing any national political ambitions, Sarma aims to strengthen his support in Assam’s urban areas and among voters who prioritize law, order, and land rights. His pledge makes this issue a key highlight in the election year.
