OpenAI has launched a new feature called Study Mode in ChatGPT to help students with their homework and exam preparation. This new mode is available for all logged-in users — including those using free, Plus, Pro, and Team versions. Users of ChatGPT Edu will get access in a few weeks.
Helps Students Learn, Not Just Get Answers
Instead of giving direct answers, Study Mode helps students solve problems step by step. It guides users by asking questions, breaking information into smaller parts, and encouraging them to think deeply. OpenAI says the tool was created with help from teachers, scientists, and education experts.
Study Mode is based on the Socratic method — a teaching technique where students are asked questions to lead them toward the answer on their own. The idea is to build thinking skills, curiosity, and self-reflection rather than memorizing answers.
Easy to Use from the Tools Menu
To use Study Mode, users can go to the Tools menu in ChatGPT. There, they will find an option called “Study and learn.” Once turned on, the chatbot changes how it responds — guiding students rather than giving direct solutions.
Study Mode also includes features like:
- Breaking topics into small lessons
- Custom lessons based on the user’s grade level
- Short quizzes and open-ended questions to track learning
- Prompts that improve understanding and build confidence
This move comes shortly after Google launched Gemini for Education, a similar AI tool for students and teachers.
Although Study Mode helps students learn better, it doesn’t have parental controls or any lock feature yet.
OpenAI said that the goal of this mode is to make learning more active and engaging. It wants students to become better thinkers, not just faster answer-seekers.
With the introduction of Study Mode, ChatGPT is turning into more than just a chatbot — it’s now a learning partner for students everywhere.
