Huawei is getting ready to launch the Mate XT 2, the next version of its triple-folding smartphone. The new phone is expected to be the follow-up to the Mate XT Ultimate Design, which was launched in China in September 2024 and later in global markets in February 2025.
The Huawei Mate XT 2 will likely come with some big upgrades. According to a leak from Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, the Mate XT 2 may run on the new Kirin 9020 5G chip, replacing the Kirin 9010 used in the earlier model. This chip will offer faster performance and better connectivity.
One exciting feature tipped for the Mate XT 2 is satellite connectivity, which means the phone could send messages even when there’s no regular mobile network. It is also expected to have a 50MP main camera with a variable aperture (for better light control) and an improved periscope telephoto lens for zoom shots.
The screen size and battery capacity are likely to stay the same as the Mate XT Ultimate Design, which had a 10.2-inch flexible LTPO OLED display when fully unfolded. When folded once, the screen becomes 7.9 inches, and folding it again gives a 6.4-inch phone-like screen. The battery size is 5,600mAh, with 66W wired and 50W wireless charging support.
The Mate XT Ultimate Design came with 16GB RAM and up to 1TB storage, and it ran on HarmonyOS 4.2. It featured three cameras on the back:
- A 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization
- A 12MP ultrawide camera
- A 12MP periscope zoom lens
The Mate XT 2 is expected to launch in September 2025, possibly around the same time as Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Tri-Fold. Huawei has already filed for regulatory approval under the model number GRL-AL20, hinting that the official launch could be near.
With this new device, Huawei continues to push the limits of foldable smartphone technology, aiming to lead the market with innovative tri-fold designs.
